In the town of Kurouzu-cho, Kirie Goshima leads a seemingly ordinary life with her family. One day, while walking to the train station to meet her boyfriend, Shuuichi Saito, she notices his father fixated on a snail shell in an alley. Dismissing it at first, she later mentions the encounter to Shuuichi, who admits that his father has been behaving strangely lately. Shuuichi confides in Kirie about his growing urge to escape the town, expressing concern that it is becoming increasingly "infected" with spirals, hinting at a deeper, unsettling phenomenon affecting their lives. But his father's obsession with the shape soon proves deadly, beginning a chain of horrific and unexplainable events that causes the residents of Kurouzu-cho to spiral into madness.
